The Challenge

Unify the Past

Considering we’ve spent in the realm of oh, say, 10,000 hours pouring over Bungie’s Destiny and Destiny 2, we’ve pretty much made it a full-time job to live and breathe in that universe. And so, we felt well-prepared (if not entirely geeked out) in meeting with Destiny and Halo’s creators to talk art over some morning coffee and waffles. The objective: team up with Bungie to uniform the legacy key art for Destiny 2’s base game, two expansions and upgrade edition.

We’re not crying. You’re crying.

THE APPROACH

An Enduring World

Set in a mythic science fictional future, Destiny 2 has no shortage of killer art to reference. Our exploration began with Destiny’s Tricorn symbol as an anchor. The question then arose: how do we accurately rep all three hero classes (Titans, Hunters and Warlocks) in an evergreen way if they’re continuously being updated, rebuilt and outfitted with cool ass new gear sets? We say: let’s try it all.

The Process

Boundless

Before landing on a system, we looked at endless ways of featuring the hero story characters and various ways of working narrative into the nuances of the backgrounds. Some iterations were more elaborate and involved, others more refined. Our solution: use mysterious silhouettes set against a glimpse of the epic world beyond to create a timelessness free of ephemeral details.

THE PAYOFF

Destiny Awaits

Our 4 pieces of key art reflect each of the expansion’s enigmatic and foreboding worlds ready for the guardians and players to conquer. Our collaboration with Bungie has been a gamer’s dream fulfilled. With the forthcoming expansion, Beyond Light, we eagerly look forward to logging in more hours towards our status as Destiny gurus.
