THE CHALLENGE
Experience the Throwback
1992’s Super Bowl XXVI was one to remember. It wasn’t watching the Buffalo Bills lose back-to-back Super Bowls, but rather a certain Pepsi commercial starring Cindy Crawford and a red sports car that forever captured our adolescent memory. What is one to do when Jam3 approaches you with a boundary-pushing VR project that would serve as a companion piece to Pepsi’s Super Bowl LII commercial? A veritable gateway taking us back in time to live out their most iconic commercials and using THE DeLorean? The only appropriate adult-like response:
Yes, Yes, Yes! Give it to us!
THE APPROACH
Designing From
Every Angle
Rather than directing the camera moves, trigger animations and a sequence of events pull the user’s gaze. Concept design and storyboards helped set the narrative structure, but it’s the timing and actions that ultimately influences what we want the user to look at. Cindy. The Delorean. Cindy. We mean the Pepsi can. Once we were rendering full-color scenes, we were able to adjust the narrative in more natural ways. And compositing, oh compositing! 360 VR requires the entire world to be rendered with equal detail and care. Yes, even Cindy, and the end result is well worth it.

See You in Virtual Reality
This was one hell of a VR experience. Since it was an interactive project, we delivered far beyond a single video asset, including all sorts of triggered animations for the user’s gaze. The project went live as a website letting everyone with a mobile phone experience it. Got a VR headset or google cardboard? Check it out in full Virtual Reality. Someday, we hope all commercials will be holographic VR media, but for now, we’ll enjoy being right on the bleeding edge of it.
