We’re seeing a trend in the gaming industry where the community of die hard fans want both a dynamic reveal trailer of new toys they get to play with, but also just want to the honest gameplay of the power fantasy those toys represent. To have their cake and eat it too. With Riot, we’ve worked on various gameplay trailers to reveal new characters, skins, weapons and maps across both League and Valorant. With Ambessa we wanted to showcase the gameplay in a different light, integrate some of that mograph energy INTO the capture to give the fans the best of both worlds in a single trailer.
Ambessa was introduced within the first season of Arcane, Riot’s incredibly successful Netflix animated series. With a fresh Season 02 story arc, it was Ambessa’s time to bring her cunning to the Rift. To do that, we brought together illustration, abstracted chains and crystals shattering, and dynamic gameplay capture into one trailer that was deeper than your standard gameplay trailer cut. We designed skyboxes that were brought into the engine and captured with, we augmented the gameplay capture with punctuated moments of animation, and told her story of being the general who sees all, and doesn’t just wreck shop on the Rift, but she COMMANDS it. With close to a million views when it launched, Ambessa was a hit with the community.
